Useful questions to ask your engineer when installing a new boiler

Boiler installation can be a complex process, and one quite alien to those of us who don’t do it every day!

If you are about to, or are considering, installing a new boiler there are a few things you should be aware of to help make the installation as smooth as possible. Many of us have not gone through a boiler installation for a long time, so can be forgiven for forgetting what the process involves. We’re here to help! We’ve outlined some key things to check with your engineer to avoid any confusion along the way.

If you are installing a new boiler type, or model, it may well need additional equipment plumbed in that you didn’t have before. This may involve extra work and a bit more disruption to your home. Some examples of these types of questions are:

  • Is my existing gas pipe the correct size?
  • Where should the condensate waste pipe be fitted?

Regulations around gas safety can also change over the years, so the size and placement of pipework can change. If your current boiler was installed several years ago, it may need to be moved to accommodate new regulations. Asking questions like those above will help identify this before any work needs to start so that you can be prepared.

There are also some more generic questions about the installation process that you can ask that can help you plan how to prepare your family and home before the installation starts;

  • How long will the installation take?
  • How long will we be without hot water/ central heating?
  • Do I need to bleed the radiators before or after the installation?

Asking these few simple questions will help you plan whether you need to make other arrangements whilst the installation takes place. It will also help ensure that your home will be as comfortable as possible during the installation.
